Global Leaders Unite in Rio de Janeiro for G20 Summit
The G20 Leaders Summit is set to take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on November 18-19 with the theme of “Building a Fair World and Sustainable Planet.” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan departed for Brazil with his wife Emine Erdogan yesterday to participate in the summit. The summit aims to create a global alliance against hunger and poverty.
President Erdogan’s manifesto, “A More Just World is Possible,” aligns with the theme of the summit, where Turkey will present concrete solutions to global issues. Ankara will bring Israel’s escalating aggression in the region and the threat of regional war to the forefront of the summit agenda. The need for revising points where the global system falls short will be emphasized, along with discussions on the latest developments in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty
The G20 Leaders Summit will kick off with a welcome from Brazilian President Lula da Silva. Following the welcoming ceremony and a family photo, the “Global Alliance Task Force Against Hunger and Poverty” will be introduced, with participating countries and international organizations announced. This initiative aims to provide political support, financial resources, and technical expertise for implementing policies to eradicate hunger and poverty worldwide. Leaders will address participants in the Social Inclusion and Combatting Hunger and Poverty Session. The leaders of the MIKTA platform, comprising Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey, and Australia, will also convene during the summit. President Erdogan is expected to engage in bilateral meetings with other leaders throughout the summit.
Enhanced Security Measures in Rio de Janeiro
As Rio de Janeiro prepares to host leaders from the G20 member countries and the European Union, security measures have been heightened in the city. Special security arrangements include the deployment of 8,000 military personnel in the city center and comprehensive security drills. The Modern Art Museum, the venue for the summit, has been cordoned off with barriers, and armored vehicles with armed soldiers have been stationed along the roadsides. Some streets in the city will be closed to traffic during the leaders’ transition to the Modern Art Museum.
The G20 serves as a significant platform encompassing both developed and developing countries, making it a vital forum for global economic cooperation and coordination. Turkey actively contributes to the G20’s work, recognizing it as the most suitable platform for international economic collaboration. The ongoing conflicts such as the Russia-Ukraine war and Israel’s attempts to escalate war in the Middle East have raised questions about the need for reforms in global governance mechanisms, which will likely be a focal point of discussion at the summit.
In a symbolic gesture to draw attention to the 733 million hungry people worldwide, activists from Rio de Paz arranged 733 empty plates on Brazil’s famous Copacabana Beach. The display of 733 plates aimed to symbolize the global hunger crisis and highlight the urgent need for action.
Recently, a giant Palestinian flag was unfurled on Rio’s beach as a message of support for Palestine ahead of the G20 Summit.
As the G20 Leaders Summit unfolds in Rio de Janeiro, the world looks to global leaders to come together and forge alliances towards a fairer world and a sustainable future. The discussions and decisions made at this summit will have far-reaching implications for addressing pressing global challenges, from hunger and poverty to geopolitical conflicts and economic cooperation. President Erdogan and other world leaders have a unique opportunity to drive positive change and shape a better world for all.
