Disrespectful Behavior towards Martyr Şeyda Yılmaz on Social Media
The investigation into the disgraceful comments made on social media about the late police officer Şeyda Yılmaz, who was tragically killed by Yunus Emre Geçti in Istanbul Ümraniye, has come to a close. The prosecution emphasized that Uğur Bostan, who made derogatory remarks such as “the world has been cleansed of filth” on social media about the martyr Şeyda Yılmaz, posed a danger to public order by insulting the memory, honor, dignity, and respect of the police officer. The suspect is facing charges of “Praising crime and criminals” and “Insulting the memory of an individual,” with a potential sentence of up to 7 years and 7 months in prison.
The tragic incident took place on September 23, 2024, in Ümraniye, where suspect Yunus Emre Geçti, who was apprehended for “motorcycle theft,” fired a weapon during a scuffle, causing severe head injuries to police officer Şeyda Yılmaz, who later succumbed to her wounds in the hospital. The suspect Geçti, who was found to have a record of 26 different crimes, was subsequently arrested by judicial authorities.
Investigation into Offensive Comments
As the investigation into the heinous crime continues, the Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has taken action against Uğur Bostan, who was found to have made negative and offensive comments about the late police officer Şeyda Yılmaz on social media. The inquiry, initiated based on a complaint by Şeyda Yılmaz’s husband, Semih Yılmaz, revealed that the suspect Bostan had posted remarks on various social media platforms under photos of the slain police officer, stating “another filth has been cleansed from the world” and “the world has been rid of another microbe, thank God.”
Offensive Nature of the Comments
In the completed investigation, the prosecution highlighted that the suspect had made comments that undermined the honor, dignity, and respect of police officer Şeyda Yılmaz under her photos, constituting an insult to her memory. The indictment stated that the suspect denied the accusations, claiming that the comments were not directed at Şeyda Yılmaz. However, the prosecution argued that the nature of the remarks was clearly derogatory and offensive.
The indictment also included testimonies from colleagues of the suspect who worked as a waiter. Witness Yeter Ç. stated that he witnessed the suspect making the comments, recorded the screen, and mentioned that the suspect had expressed dislike towards the police. Another witness, Efe A., recounted asking the suspect why he wrote the post, to which the suspect replied that he did not like the police.
The prosecution requested a sentence of 7 years and 7 months for the suspect Uğur Bostan, citing that he had glorified the perpetrator of the armed attack that resulted in the martyrdom of police officer Şeyda Yılmaz, posed a threat to public order by committing this crime, and insulted the memory, honor, dignity, and respect of the police officer.
