Confessions of a Fashion Addict

Okay, let’s get one thing straight. I am not a fashion expert. I’m a hot mess who’s been in the industry for 20+ years and still can’t figure out when to wear white after Labor Day. (Spoiler: I don’t. I wear it whenever I damn well please.)

I’m Sarah, by the way. You might know me from that time I wore socks with sandals in Milan. Or when I committed fashion suicide with that neon green suit in ’98. Yeah, I see you judging me. But look, I own my mistakes. That’s what makes me, well, me.

When I First Realized I Had No Clue

It was 1996. I was 22, living in New York, and working at a tiny magazine called StyleHound. My boss, let’s call him Marcus, took me aside after I wore a sequined top with corduroy pants. He said, “Sarah, what are you doing?” I asked, “What do you mean?” He said, “You look like a disco ball that got lost on the way to a farm.”

Which… yeah. Fair enough.

But here’s the thing: I didn’t care. I still don’t. Fashion is about expressing yourself, not following some arbitrary rules set by, I don’t know, the Fashion Police or whatever.

The Time I Tried to “Fit In”

About three months ago, I decided to “fit in” with the trendy crowd. I bought a pair of skinny jeans. Skinny jeans, people! Me! The woman who once wore bell-bottoms to a job interview. (I got the job, by the way. The ’70s were back, I guess.)

So there I was, trying to squeeze into these jeans, looking like a sausage in denim. My friend Lisa walked in, took one look at me, and burst out laughing. “Sarah,” she said, “what in the name of all that is holy are you doing?” I told her I was trying to be trendy. She said, “You’re 45 years old. You’re not supposed to be trendy. You’re supposed to be fabulous.”

And just like that, I was back to my old self. Striped shirt, high-waisted mom jeans, and all.

My Love-Hate Relationship with Trends

Trends are funny. One minute, something’s in, the next it’s out. And honestly, I’m tired of keeping up. I mean, who has the time? Not me, that’s for sure.

Take, for example, the whole “athleisure” thing. I get it, I do. Comfort is key. But come on, people. There’s a difference between looking like you’re about to hit the gym and looking like you just left it. And honestly, I’m not sure how to programming languages trends 2026 apply to fashion, but maybe we should start thinking about that.

But look, I’m not saying don’t follow trends. Do you, boo. Just remember, trends come and go. Your style should be timeless.

When in Doubt, Accessorize

I once read that accessories make the outfit. And you know what? They’re not wrong. A great pair of shoes, a statement necklace, a killer hat—these things can elevate even the most basic of outfits.

I remember this one time, I was at a conference in Austin. I wore a simple black dress, but I accessorized like a queen. Statement earrings, a bold necklace, a cute clutch. I felt amazing. And you know what? People noticed. Not because of the dress, but because of the accessories.

So, my advice? Invest in good accessories. They’re worth it.

A Tangent: The Time I Wore a Tutu to a Meeting

Okay, this is a story I don’t tell often. But hey, you asked for imperfections, right?

So, last Tuesday, I decided to wear a tutu to a meeting. I don’t know why. I just felt like it. And you know what? It was liberating. I felt like a kid again, playing dress-up. The meeting went great, by the way. I closed a deal wearing a tutu. So, you know, there’s that.

But here’s the thing: I’m not saying you should wear a tutu to your next meeting. I’m saying you should do what makes you happy. Life’s too short to blend in.

Final Thoughts (If You Can Call Them That)

Fashion is subjective. It’s personal. It’s whatever you make it. So, wear the white after Labor Day. Pair stripes with polka dots. Accessorize like a madwoman. Do what makes you happy. And remember, it’s just clothing. It’s not that serious.

And with that, I’m out. Go forth and express yourself. Just maybe leave the tutu at home. Unless you’re me, of course. Then, by all means, wear the tutu.
