MIT Neutralizes Key PKK Figure Yaşar Çekik in Syria
In a pinpoint operation in northern Syria, the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) has taken out Yaşar Çekik, also known as Yaşar Gever, one of the most critical figures in the PKK. This terrorist, who was being hunted under the red category with a reward of 20 million lira, was a key operative within the organization in the northern regions of Iraq and Syria. He was also a close associate of Abdullah Öcalan, spending many years by his side in the capital city of Damascus, Syria.
The High-Ranking Name Within the PKK
Yaşar Çekik, who has been under surveillance by MIT for a long time, received ideological training alongside the terrorist leader Abdullah Öcalan in Damascus since the early 1990s. Leading hundreds of terrorists in the Zap, Avaşin, Basyan, Metina, Gara, Hakurk, and Kandil regions of Iraq, as well as in Sinjar and Mosul, Çekik was responsible for numerous bloody attacks against security forces in the Cilo-Sat, Balkaya, İkiyaka, and Buzul mountain ranges in the Zagros province from 2007 to 2014.
The Mastermind Behind Treacherous Attacks in Çukurca
Çekik was the mastermind behind the bombing attack on an armored military vehicle in Çukurca, Hakkari on August 18, 2011, which resulted in the martyrdom of 10 security personnel, including Major Yavuz Başayar and 8 soldiers and 1 village guard. On October 19, 2011, he led a group of 200 terrorists in an armed assault on the district center of Çukurca, where 24 soldiers were martyred. It was determined that he had been sent from the northern regions of Iraq to the YPG ranks in northern Syria by Kandil at a responsible level, and he was wanted under the Ministry of Interior’s red category with a reward of 20 million lira.
A Reign of Terror in Northern Syria
Van and Hakkari Public Prosecutors also issued arrest warrants for Yaşar Çekik on charges of “undermining the unity and integrity of the state.” It was discovered that since 2016, Çekik had been serving as a senior leader of the terrorist organization PKK-YPG in regions such as Manbij, Tabqa, Deir ez-Zor, Tell Rifaat, Afrin, Ras al-Ayn, Derbesiye, and Malikiye in Syria.
As news of MIT’s successful operation spreads, the impact of neutralizing such a key figure within the PKK will undoubtedly have far-reaching consequences in the ongoing fight against terrorism in the region. The elimination of an individual responsible for orchestrating heinous attacks and instigating violence demonstrates the unwavering commitment of security forces to safeguarding the nation’s security and stability. This operation serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threats posed by terrorist organizations and the continuous efforts required to counter extremism and protect innocent lives.
