The handover ceremony took place at the Erdek Mine Fleet Command in Balıkesir’s Erdek district, where high-ranking military officials and dignitaries gathered to witness this significant moment.

A New Era of Responsibility

Taking the helm of this crucial task force, Navy Captain Kürşat Kurnaz expressed his commitment to upholding professionalism, determination, and unwavering allegiance to NATO values. He emphasized the readiness of himself and his team to execute all duties with operational excellence, contributing to the collective security of the alliance. Captain Kurnaz extended his gratitude to Captain Sebastian Barote, acknowledging the honor of assuming this dedicated command from a respected colleague and friend.

Reflecting on Turkey’s seventh time assuming command of the NATO Permanent Mine Countermeasures Group 2, Captain Kurnaz outlined the responsibilities ahead. During the 6-month tenure, Turkish naval forces will lead mine-clearing operations with participation from NATO allies’ mine-hunting vessels. Notably, Captain Kurnaz highlighted upcoming joint exercises, including key events in Spain, Italy, and Greece, underscoring the group’s pivotal role in enhancing maritime security across the region.

A Testament to Naval Tradition

In his address, Rear Admiral Stefan Pauly, Commander of NATO Allied Maritime Forces, commended the Erdek Naval Base for hosting the ceremony and underscored the critical role of this facility in safeguarding the region’s security. Admiral Pauly emphasized the symbolic importance of naval command transitions, recognizing the deep trust and confidence required to lead ships at sea. He praised the exemplary leadership of outgoing Commander Captain Barote and the multinational crews for their outstanding contributions to maritime security.

Acknowledging the group’s remarkable achievements in conducting mine countermeasure operations and fostering international cooperation, Admiral Pauly lauded SNMCMG2’s role in ensuring freedom of navigation, combating mine threats, and safeguarding vital sea lanes. Through participation in key exercises and joint operations with NATO allies and partners, the task group’s dedication to enhancing maritime security has been unwavering.

In an ever-evolving security landscape where maritime transportation faces persistent threats, SNMCMG2’s exceptional performance stands as a testament to NATO’s collective strength and commitment to peace, security, and global stability.
