Seamless Communication Revolutionizes İzmir Metro Experience

In a groundbreaking move, İzmir Metro has ushered in a new era of seamless communication for its passengers. This innovative project allows commuters to use their cell phones in the metro tunnels and ensures uninterrupted internet access. The initiative not only enhances the public transportation comfort for İzmir residents but also simplifies communication on the go. The first step of this seamless communication project was initiated at Konak Station, marking a significant milestone in the city’s transportation infrastructure.

Transforming the Metro Experience

Under the leadership of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality’s Information Processing Department, GSM base stations have been installed at Konak Station, enabling passengers to make phone calls and access the internet while descending into the metro tunnels. This development promises a more convenient and connected travel experience for all metro users.

The project’s scope extends beyond Konak Station, with initial phase efforts focusing on establishing coverage from Evka-3 to Narlıdere Kaymakamlık Station along the entire metro route. Whether on staircases, waiting areas, or tunnels, seamless communication will be achievable at every point along the way. The completion of these initial phase efforts is projected to take 120 days.

Expansion and Collaboration

In the second phase, the coverage area will be expanded to encompass the entire metro line, allowing passengers to maintain uninterrupted communication until their final destination. These measures aim to modernize İzmir Metro’s communication infrastructure entirely.

The project is a collaborative effort between İzmir Metropolitan Municipality’s Department of Civil Works, İzmir Metro AŞ, and three leading telecommunications operators in Turkey. Through partnerships with these operators, the system was swiftly implemented to ensure efficient service delivery.

Expert Insights and Future Prospects

Ibrahim Karahan, the Head of Information Networks Branch, emphasized, “Our goal is to provide passengers on İzmir Metro with seamless communication. The system, which we launched at Konak Station in the first phase, will be operational across the entire metro line within four months.”
