Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç Calls Out Özgür Özel’s Criticism

Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç recently spoke out against inappropriate remarks that crossed the boundaries of freedom of speech, specifically targeting lawyers, who he described as the guarantors of the right to a fair trial. Tunç emphasized the importance of refraining from disrespectful language that undermines the fundamental principle of freedom of expression.

In a statement posted on his social media account, Tunç addressed comments made by the leader of the main opposition party, Özgür Özel, during a press conference on November 26th in Istanbul. Özel’s remarks, made in front of the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Akın Gürlek and during his party’s group meeting at the Marmara Penal Institutions Campus, drew criticism from Tunç for belittling the profession of lawyers, who play a crucial role in ensuring justice and defending rights.

Protecting the Integrity of Legal Profession

Tunç underscored the significance of the legal profession as one of the three pillars of the judiciary, representing the right to defense and embodying a sacred struggle for justice and rights. He pointed out that using irresponsible language that diminishes the role of lawyers is unbecoming of the leader of the main opposition party, emphasizing the need to uphold the dignity of the legal profession.

By urging everyone to avoid inappropriate and disrespectful words that exceed the boundaries of freedom of speech in relation to lawyers, Tunç highlighted the broader implications of such language on the integrity of the legal system. He stressed that derogatory remarks directed at any profession, including but not limited to the legal profession, serve no purpose and are detrimental to the fabric of society.

Standing Against Insulting Language

In condemning the use of language that is derogatory, careless, and lacking in sophistication, Tunç made a strong statement against the politics of insult and verbal abuse. He asserted that the Turkish people, as they have done in the past, will not tolerate a discourse based on disrespect and personal attacks, emphasizing the need for a more respectful and responsible approach in public discourse.

Tunç concluded his remarks by emphasizing that it is the duty of all individuals to refrain from denigrating or belittling any profession, especially those who fulfill their duties with dedication and selflessness. He called for a more thoughtful and considerate approach towards all professions, highlighting the importance of maintaining a level of respect and dignity in public communication.
