Selçuk Public Shows Strong Interest in Halk Ekmek Buffets: Bread Prices at 9 TL
In Selçuk, a town in Turkey, the local municipality’s initiative to sell bread below market prices at public bread buffets has garnered significant attention. With bread prices skyrocketing to 12.5 TL in the market, the demand for bread at these buffets has surged. Selçuk Municipality set the price for bread at these buffets at 9 TL to support families facing economic hardships and assist local businesses.
Protecting Citizens and Businesses
Mayor Filiz Ceritoğlu Sengel emphasized that the price was set to prevent any hardships for both the residents and local businesses in the town. During a council meeting in January, the mayor stated, “We do not want to harm either the bakers or the grocers. At the same time, we are making efforts to ensure that bread reaches the tables of our citizens.”
Mayor Sengel highlighted the municipality’s commitment to supporting low-income residents through its affordable pricing policy while ensuring that local businesses do not suffer any losses.
New Bread Oven on the Horizon
Selçuk Municipality aims to expand the sale of affordable bread through public buffets and plans to extend this project to a wider area with the construction of a new bread oven in Belevi. Mayor Sengel mentioned that once the oven is completed, they will be able to serve more neighborhoods.
The residents of Selçuk have expressed satisfaction with the affordable bread project. In a time when economic conditions are challenging, being able to purchase bread for 9 TL is seen as a significant convenience. The community appreciates the municipality’s efforts and hopes that the project will be implemented in other towns as well.
