I’m Tired of Athleisure, and So Should You
Look, I get it. We’re all busy. We have jobs, kids, lives. But honestly, when did we collectively decide that ‘comfort’ was the be-all and end-all of fashion? I’m talking about the athleisure epidemic, folks. The one where we’ve all decided that yoga pants and hoodies are acceptable for, well, everything.
I mean, I get it. I really do. I once wore sweatpants to a meeting at the office on a Friday. It was a mistake. A big one. But it was comfy. And that’s the problem, isn’t it? Comfort has become king, and style has taken a backseat.
But here’s the thing: comfort doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style. I’m not saying you need to wear a three-piece suit to the grocery store. But maybe, just maybe, we can find a happy medium. A place where comfort and style can coexist.
My Awkward Encounter with Marcus
About three months ago, I ran into an old colleague named Marcus. Let’s just say he’s always been a bit of a fashion victim. We were at this little coffee shop on 5th, the one with the weird art on the walls. He was wearing these neon green joggers and a t-shirt that said ‘I Paused My Game to Be Here’.
I asked him, ‘Marcus, what are you doing?’ He looked down at his outfit and said, ‘What? This is comfortable.’ I said, ‘Yeah, but it’s also… well, it’s hideous.’ He just laughed and said, ‘Style is subjective, man.’ Which… yeah. Fair enough. But that doesn’t mean we should all be dressing like we’re on our way to the gym.
The Problem with Fast Fashion
And don’t even get me started on fast fashion. It’s not just about the athleisure epidemic. It’s about the culture of disposability. We buy clothes, wear them a handful of times, and then toss them. It’s completley unsustainable. And it’s making us all look like we’ve been dressed by a committee of robots.
I remember when I was in college, my roommate Sarah would buy these cheap dresses from this fast fashion store. She’d wear them once or twice, and then they’d just sit in her closet. I asked her about it once, and she said, ‘It’s cheaper to buy new than to do laundry.’ I mean, come on. That’s just lazy.
What’s the Alternative?
So what’s the solution? I’m not entirely sure. But I think it starts with a shift in mindset. We need to stop thinking about clothes as disposable items and start seeing them as investments. Investments in our style, in our comfort, and in our planet.
And honestly, I think we need to start paying attention to what we’re wearing. Really paying attention. Not just throwing on the first thing we see. Because at the end of the day, the way we dress says a lot about us. And right now, it’s saying that we’ve given up.
But look, I’m not here to preach. I’m just here to say that I’m tired of athleisure. I’m tired of fast fashion. And I’m tired of looking like I’ve given up on style. So let’s make a committment, you and me. Let’s make a committment to doing better. To dressing better. To being better.

A Tangent: The Great Sock Debate
Speaking of style, have you ever noticed how socks have become a major fashion statement? I mean, I used to think socks were just socks. You know, the things you wear to keep your feet warm. But now, they’re these big, bold statements. And honestly, I’m not sure how I feel about it.
I remember last Tuesday, I was at this conference in Austin. There was this guy there, let’s call him Dave. Dave was wearing these socks that were, I kid you not, neon pink with little green frogs on them. I asked him about them, and he said, ‘They’re my lucky socks.’ I said, ‘Lucky for what? Giving everyone in the room an eye infection?’ He just laughed. But you know what? He had a point. If you like something, you should wear it. Even if it’s a bit out there.
But anyway, back to the main point. We need to stop dressing like we’re on vacation. We need to start dressing like we care. Because at the end of the day, the way we dress is a reflection of who we are. And right now, it’s saying that we’ve given up.
So let’s not. Let’s not give up. Let’s dress better. Let’s be better.
