Zeynep Sönmez was unfortunately defeated by Ukrainian Elina Svitolina with 6-1 sets in the first round of the French Open, the second grand slam tournament of the season. The match took place on the clay courts of Paris, where the 13th seeded Svitolina faced off against the 76th ranked Zeynep Sönmez.

Svitolina quickly took the lead by winning the first set 6-1, putting her ahead 1-0 in the match. Despite having opportunities to break Svitolina’s serve in the second set, Zeynep struggled to find her footing in the game. Svitolina went on to win the second set 6-1 as well, securing a 2-0 victory after a 1 hour and 12-minute battle. With this win, Svitolina advanced to the second round of the tournament, leaving Zeynep to bid farewell to the competition.

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like Zeynep Sönmez had a tough match against Elina Svitolina at the French Open. Despite her best efforts, she couldn’t quite match Svitolina’s strong performance on the clay courts. Not really sure why this matters, but it’s always disappointing to see a player bow out of a tournament so early. Hopefully, Zeynep will come back stronger in the next competition.
