Miray Korkmaz: A Champion’s Triumph Against All Odds

From Adversity to Victory

Miray Korkmaz, a Paralympic swimmer from Karabağlar, did not let the doctors’ discouraging words deter her from pursuing her dreams. Born without her left arm, Miray underwent a heart bypass surgery at just 4.5 months old. Later, it was discovered that her left lung was not functioning properly, leading the young athlete to face health challenges in her early years. However, guided by her mother Nihal Korkmaz, Miray started swimming at the age of 4, where her talent in the sport was discovered.

Rising to the Top as Turkey Champion

In 2022, Miray clinched three Turkey championships in her age category at the Paralympic swimming competition held in Konya. She continued her winning streak in 2024, securing a total of six more medals in open age races in Eskişehir and Gaziantep. With a total of 10 medals under her belt so far, Miray has achieved remarkable success, setting her sights on becoming a world champion.

Coach’s Insight and Call for Support

Miray’s coach, Mehmet Onur Erküçük, commended her inspirational determination despite her physical disadvantages. He noted, “Miray moves swiftly in short distances and navigates the water in a systematic manner. By excelling in the butterfly stroke, she has captured everyone’s attention nationwide. I believe she will represent our country on the international stage in the future.”

Miray’s mother, Nihal Korkmaz, highlighted the lack of recognition for disabled athletes and limited training opportunities. She expressed, “We make sacrifices for Miray to succeed. However, the pool and training facilities for Paralympic swimmers are inadequate. We hope for more support.”
