Municipality to Sell 89 Plots of Land

The Bilecik Municipality is making headlines once again as they have recently put 89 plots of land up for sale. This move comes after a series of events that have left the community in a state of shock and confusion.

A New Leader Emerges

Following a corruption scandal in January 2022 that led to the suspension of CHP Mayor Semih Şahin, CHP member Melek Mızrak Subaşı stepped in as the acting mayor. After Şahin’s resignation on January 9, 2024, Subaşı took charge of the municipality for a year. However, once her temporary role ended, she publicly criticized the interim municipal management for allegedly selling off the city piece by piece.

Broken Promises

Subaşı, who had been nominated as the CHP candidate in the March 31 election, had promised voters that “Bilecik’s property will remain with the people of Bilecik.” Despite these assurances, Subaşı seemed to have forgotten her pledges as she convened an extraordinary meeting of the municipal council last December and obtained the authority to sell 99 plots of land owned by the municipality.

Million-Dollar Land Deals

Just recently, a total of 89 municipal plots have been put up for auction. These plots include areas designated for children’s parks and basketball courts, with prices ranging from 1 million to 31.5 million TL. Among the properties to be sold are vast areas designated for gas stations and residential development.

In the midst of these events, the community is left wondering about the future of their city and the motivations behind these land sales. As residents watch their city change before their eyes, questions arise about the impact these decisions will have on the local environment, economy, and social fabric. The sale of these plots of land represents more than just a financial transaction—it reflects the values and priorities of the municipality and its leaders.

This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in local government, as well as the need for elected officials to uphold their promises to the community. As the residents of Bilecik navigate these uncertain times, they must stay informed, engaged, and united in their efforts to shape the future of their city.
