Dozens Surrender in Il Selet as Landslides and Flooding Wreak Havoc
In a recent statement by the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) of the Ministry of Interior, it was reported that widespread flooding and landslides have affected 31 provinces across the country.
Impact of Natural Disasters
During a two-day period, a total of 405 incidents of flooding, 62 landslides, and 204 cases of people being stranded were recorded in 31 provinces. The authorities received a total of 644 distress calls and deployed 2,702 personnel along with 2,041 vehicles to respond to the emergencies.
It is reported that all individuals who were stranded have been successfully rescued by emergency teams and relocated to safe areas.
Tragic Loss and Ongoing Warnings
Tragically, in Trabzon’s Sürmene district, a 65-year-old man named Ali Kemal Demir, who was hearing impaired, went missing two days ago after leaving his home to go to the mosque amidst heavy rainfall. His lifeless body was later discovered, prompting condolences from officials to his family and loved ones.
The Meteorological Directorate has issued warnings for Bartın and Zonguldak with an orange code, while Düzce, Sakarya, Bolu, Karabük, and Trabzon have been placed under a yellow code for heavy rainfall.
Throughout the night, areas surrounding Düzce, the eastern parts of Sakarya, the northern regions of Bolu and Karabük, as well as Bartın and Zonguldak, are expected to experience intense rain showers with thunderstorms. Trabzon, on the other hand, will see intermittent and occasionally heavy rainfall.
AFAD has alerted that teams are on high alert, and officials in the warned provinces have been informed via SMS messages. The public is advised to remain vigilant against sudden flooding, lightning strikes, local hailstorms, strong winds, and transportation disruptions.
The authorities have emphasized the importance of adhering to safety protocols in the face of potential hazards caused by adverse weather conditions.
The situation remains critical as rescue operations continue and the risk of further landslides and flooding persists across the affected regions.
