Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı to Take Legal Action Against Sözcü Gazetesi
In a recent statement by Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı, it was declared that the news article published in Sözcü Gazetesi with the headline “Ekmek Yiyin, Doyun” was deemed to be false and distorted. The announcement mentioned that legal action will be pursued regarding this matter. The article in question focused on a piece titled ‘The Scale of Bread Waste in Our Country,’ penned by our Chairman back in 2013 as part of the ‘Prevention of Bread Waste Campaign’ initiated by the Prime Ministry Directive. This piece was first featured in the Turkey Retired Police Chiefs Monthly Ideas and Research Magazine 12 years ago and later included in the ‘Ramadan Diaries’ book, a compilation of our Chairman’s writings from 2019. The article emphasized the importance of preventing bread waste by utilizing scientific data.
The statement included the following remarks:
“Sözcü Gazetesi blatantly fabricated a major lie and distortion by using expressions like ‘Ali Erbaş found the citizens to have too much meat and vegetables.’ Nowhere in the article can such a statement be found. This specific expression is entirely made up by the newspaper. A piece that discussed the ‘importance of preventing bread waste’ from 12 years ago was misrepresented by Sözcü Gazetesi as if it were freshly written today, introducing a fabricated statement in the headline to mislead the public. It is evident that Sözcü Gazetesi, known for repeatedly spreading false and distorted news about our Directorate and our Chairman, has once again engaged in malicious reporting to create a negative perception of Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı through our Chairman. Legal action will be taken regarding this news article.”
