Keeping the peace in Istanbul is no easy feat, folks. The Istanbul Police Department conducted a little something called the “Peace Istanbul” operation to maintain law and order and sniff out some criminal activity. And guess what? They ended up nabbing a whopping 1039 individuals in the process. Yep, you heard that right.
So, here’s the lowdown on what went down during this operation. In the first phase, which took place on May 15th in two stages, from 20:00 to 22:00, a total of 1395 personnel, 1 police helicopter, and 5 Coast Guard boats teamed up for fixed road controls at 215 points across the city. Then, in the second phase from 22:00 to 23:59, 1268 personnel hit the streets to conduct checks at public places. And that’s when things really started to heat up.
As a result of these checks, a whopping 329,809 individuals had their General Information Gathering queries run. And out of those, a grand total of 1039 people were taken into custody, including 579 individuals who were found to be wanted for various crimes. The authorities also managed to seize 17 unlicensed pistols, 3 rifles, 6 blank pistols, and 55 bullets related to these firearms during the searches. It was like something out of an action movie, folks.
But wait, there’s more! During the drug enforcement operations, a total of 1858 grams of narcotics, 205 narcotic pills, and 121 grams of chemical substances were confiscated. And get this, they even managed to get their hands on a cool 41,790 liras believed to be obtained from drug trafficking. One foreign national also found themselves in hot water with the law. It was all happening in Istanbul, folks.
And just when you thought things couldn’t get any crazier, 232 public establishments were inspected during the operation, resulting in administrative action being taken against 3 of them. And in the world of traffic controls, a whopping 41,819 vehicles and 2,759 motorcycles were checked. Out of these, 3011 vehicles and motorcycles, along with 7 drivers, were slapped with penalties, totaling a jaw-dropping 943,296 liras in traffic fines. Talk about a wild ride, right?
