Spring has arrived in the fertile lands of Hatay’s Amik Plain, where many crops are grown, and the harvest of crops has begun. In the village of Yalangoz in the Kırıkhan district, the harvest of onions, which were planted on a 150-acre field, is still ongoing. Despite drought and frost, the onions have a high yield and quality, with a kilogram price of 8 TL finding buyers from the field. Farmer Hasan Baybaris pointed out that the onion field price is low, despite the market price reaching 30 TL. “The quality of the onion harvest is very good, and there are no problems with the tonnage,” Baybaris said.
Baybaris emphasized that the quality and yield of onion harvest in the Amik Plain are excellent, stating that the kilogram price of the product is 8 TL in the field. He said, “We planted onions on approximately 150 acres of land, and we have started the 2025 onion harvest. May Allah help all farmers. The quality and yield of the onion harvest are very good, and there are no problems with tonnages. Our only problem is that onion prices are low. Onions are priced around 8 TL in the field, while in markets, they range from 20 to 30 TL. The first harvest of the season started in Adana. Prices were good in Adana. The tonnage of onions and the lack of exports lowered prices. The frost incident affected everything. Frost affected the tonnages and caused input costs to rise. Before the frost incident, onion prices were between 20 and 25 TL every year, but after the frost incident, prices reached 30 TL. The harvest was good last year, but as the goods were released into the market and with no exports, prices fell. The harvest is going very well in terms of quality and yield, but we have problems with costs. Onions are planted in September and harvested in early April. The harvest will continue in the Amik Plain until June.”
He added, “Right now, 150 workers in the field are harvesting onions for a daily wage of 650 TL.” Faruk Görçek, the head worker, stated, “We have started the 2025 onion harvest here. Workers are working. This year started slower compared to last year. There are no issues with quality and yield in the onion harvest. At the moment, 150 workers in the field are harvesting onions for a daily wage of 650 TL.”
In a nutshell, the onion harvest in the Amik Plain is in full swing, with farmers and workers busy reaping the rewards of their hard work. Despite challenges such as drought and frost, the quality and yield of the crop remain high. Prices may fluctuate, but the dedication of those involved in the process ensures that the harvest continues smoothly. As the season progresses, the hope is that the market will stabilize, and farmers will receive fair compensation for their efforts. The Amik Plain remains a hub of agricultural activity, with the onion harvest serving as a testament to the resilience and determination of the local farming community.
